Historical Sketch
In May 1889 a society was organized to study The Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy.
Meetings were held in the homes of various interested members, but soon church rooms were rented on the second floor of the
First National Bank Building at 154 Main Street.
Organizing a church was begun in February 1894 and state laws, pertaining to such, were studied. The first two readers
were elected in April 1895. The first reading room was opened in the church in 1900. A building fund was started the same
year.
In 1901 the property at 61 Chestnut Street was purchased and First Church of Christ, Scientist of Oneonta, a corporation,
was organized under the provision of an Act of Legislature of the State of New York. The church was dedicated November 25,
1906.
In August 1963 the existing structure at 61 Chestnut Street was demolished and construction begun on the present edifice.
On August 2, 1964 the first services were held in the new church. Dedication was held on May 17, 1970.
